The Countries Producing the Most Renewable Electricity

Clean electricity production has expanded rapidly around the world, but the largest volumes remain concentrated in a relatively small group of countries.

For this ranking, clean energy means renewable electricity generation from sources such as hydropower, wind and solar. Nuclear power is not included.

Using 2025 renewable electricity data, China produced about 3,913 terawatt-hours (TWh) of renewable electricity, more than three times the output of the United States.

Brazil, India and Canada followed, with hydropower, wind and solar playing major roles in their electricity systems.

China’s renewable output includes a very large combination of hydropower, wind and solar. In 2025, its solar generation reached about 1,175 TWh and wind generation about 1,135 TWh.

The United States ranked second, with wind and solar making up a large part of its renewable output. Brazil and Canada relied much more heavily on hydropower, while India’s renewable expansion was increasingly driven by solar and wind.

Globally, renewable sources generated about 10,715 TWh of electricity in 2025. Renewable electricity therefore accounted for roughly a third of the world’s total electricity generation.

There is an important difference between producing the most renewable electricity and having the cleanest electricity mix. Large countries can generate enormous amounts of renewable power while still producing substantial electricity from coal or gas.

The rankings are therefore best understood as a measure of renewable electricity output rather than a complete ranking of national energy systems.
